Top Ranking Apps From the Foothills of North Carolina

Winston-Salem, North Carolina – Winston-Salem, North Carolina is not known as a hotbed of activity for iPhone game development, but acclaimed illustrator, Kyle T. Webster, is out to change that. His first game, ‘White Lines’ was released in March of 2010 and it soared into the top 20 games list in the Apple iTunes store. When over 25,000 copies of ‘White Lines’ sold in just two months, Kyle decided to dive deeper into game development and has not looked back.

Kyle partnered with a developer, Denis Hennessy, in Ireland, to build four more games. The two developers found each other on Twitter. The first of their games, ‘Plates!,’ went on sale this past Monday, August 16th in the iTunes store. Though Kyle and Denis (a founding partner of the nimble development team, Peer Assembly) have never met in person, they sometimes feel as if they share an office space, thanks to software like Skype, which allows them to video chat and collaborate in real time.

‘Plates!’ is a fast-paced game of kitchen mayhem in which plates of food zoom by on conveyor belts, while the player tries to quickly add the right sauce to each food. The game starts off at a manageable pace but quickly accelerates to a frantic speed, while adding more difficulty in the form of dynamite sticks hidden in hotdog buns that can easily be mistaken for regular hotdogs. If a player puts the wrong sauce on a food, forgets to add a sauce, or ‘sauces’ a dynamite hotdog, the game is over.

Kyle, an illustrator and designer by trade, created the game concept and designed the graphics and animations for ‘Plates!’, and Denis made it all work perfectly on the IOS platform. After five months and more than 30 full game iterations, ‘Plates!’ was ready for submission to Apple in the first week of August. The game was approved one week later and Kyle prepared some last minute marketing materials to line up with the launch on August 16th.

‘Plates!’ cracked the top 75 games list in the USA after its first day in the App Store in the Family category, and Apple Europe has already expressed an interest in featuring the game. MacWorld UK will release a 4 star review this week, as well. In its first day on the market, three unsolicited reviews were published on Monday and all gave ‘Plates!’ very high marks. Additionally, a promotional video featuring first-time game players’ reactions to the game and the video was posted on YouTube. Ads were purchased for placement on some prominent game review sites, and a web page, digital press packet, and Twitter feed were also created to help the game gain a foothold in the overcrowded iPhone game marketplace.

Kyle is hopeful not only that ‘Plates!’ will become a success, but that the attention paid to his games will perhaps encourage other developers in Winston-Salem to create some strong and exciting entries for the marketplace. Thanks to the ubiquity of the technology required to make these apps, the opportunity exists for residents of smaller towns and cities around the world to make a real splash in the iTunes store.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later
* 12.9 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Plates! 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category.

Three Tips for Creating a Native iPad App

New York, NY – It’s in magazines and newspapers. It’s on television and radio. It’s on buses and billboards and pretty much everywhere you look (except for Apple stores, where it’s likely still sold out). It’s the iPad! Selling three million units in the first 80 days, this hot new touchscreen tablet from Apple is a runaway hit.

Every iPhone and iPod touch app developer looking to take the next step is moving into the iPad arena. Right now there are more than 200,000 apps in the App Store. With the iPad’s ability to run most of these existing apps without any modifications, iPad users have immediate access to a vast catalog of apps.

Although an existing iPhone app may run fine on the iPad, these unmodified apps provide an inferior user experience. iPhone apps pale in comparison to the sheer beauty and flexibility of native iPad apps. At the end of the day, iPhone and iPad are inherently different beasts, with different form factors and capabilities that encourage different usage patterns.

iPhone apps were designed for the iPhone, while the iPad should be treated as an entirely new platform with its own set of design requirements. Dave Wooldridge author of Apress’s latest book “Beginning iPad Development for iPhone Developers: Mastering the iPad SDK” provides three useful tips for all iPhone developers who want to leverage their skills to master the iPad-exclusive frameworks and features to create professional apps for the iPad:

Design app interfaces optimized for the iPad by taking advantage of the new UIKit features:
* Popovers
* Split View Controllers
* Modal Views

Build powerful productivity solutions that utilize:
* New graphics functionality
* Core Text
* Document Sharing
* Advanced input methods

Take advantage of the iPad’s superior media capabilities with its new video and display options

About “Beginning iPad Development for iPhone Developers: Mastering the iPad SDK”

Jack Nutting has been using Cocoa since the olden days, long before it was even called Cocoa. He’s used Cocoa and its predecessors to develop software for a wide range of industries and applications including gaming, graphic design, online digital distribution, telecommunications, finance, publishing, and travel. New iPad Game to teach Kids the Alphabet and Numbers with Fun

Genoa, Italy – Dot Next today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of Magnetic Alphabet 1.0, the iPad edition of the classic magnetic board game. The development of the application comes from our experience with children: we all have children or grandchildren between 3 and 10 and we noticed that their best games are the simple and immediate ones.

Sophisticated games leave little to their imagination, while the old magnetic board with a handful of colored letters allows them to free their imagination. Transforming this experience into a game for iPad was natural: magnetic alphabet contains 95 different pieces in 6 colors, for a total of 570 magnets to be placed freely on the board: a real stimulus for imagination and creativity of our children, without the stress of having to learn features and rules typical of more complex games.

The magnetic alphabet is suitable for children of all ages, both those who already write and those who have yet to learn the alphabet. Knowing the alphabet and numbers in preschool age helps children deal with school more certainty: this game is the ideal tool to start to become familiar with letters and numbers in the lightest and most enjoyable way.

For children who have already started the school it is a great way to combine playing and learning, thus making it more pleasant. It is a good opportunity to play with our children teaching them something: maybe this is the most important thing! It is also a great diversion for those times when kids get bored as long trips, restaurant dinners, parties with friends: unavoidable situations that are easily solved with the magnetic alphabet.

Key features:
* 95 different magnets in 6 colors, for a total of 570 pieces
* Every single magnet can be used more than once
* Save the composition as image locally
* Show your kids’ creation to your friends on Facebook
* Quick video tutorial
* No need to gather dozen of pieces all araound the room once the game ends!

Device Requirements:
