GPSmyCity’s City Walk iPhone Apps Challenge Traditional Bus Tours

Las Vegas, Nevada – GPSmyCity.com, Inc., an iPhone software start-up company based in Las Vegas, is offering city walk iPhone apps that turn an iPhone into a trusted tour guide helping visitors navigate independently and with ease through over 180 cities around the world. GPSmyCity sets for itself the mission to turn every tourist into their own tour guide and its iPhone travel apps threaten to make traditional bus tours obsolete.

When downloading the iPhone travel app, one gets a set of self-guided walking tours through the selected city. With over 2,000 walking tours available, GPSmyCity.com is the largest travel portal of its kind. Getting lost is never an option as the app comes with detailed tour route maps and powerful navigation features using the GPS technology that guides visitor from one sight to the next with accurate turn-by-turn directions to famous attractions, monuments and interesting sights as well as hidden gems. Walking tours like ‘Casanova’s Venice’, ‘Belgian Beer Tour in Brussels’, ‘Ultimate Girls’ Night Out in Buenos Aires’, ‘Romantic Fountains of Rome’, ‘Beijing Markets’ or ‘Vienna’s Antique and Craft Shops’ offer unique explorations of one’s dream destinations.

An avid antique collector of 15th-19th century printed maps, Founder Jim Zhu, became frustrated when he couldn’t find a tour guide to steer him to antique shops and old book stores where he hunts for old maps when traveling. It seemed to him that the majority of bus tours or group tours are for tourists who want to visit the few popular tour sights and nothing else. He pondered for a long time about creating self-guided tours for people with special interests or hobbies as well as tours to see the popular tourist attractions.

And so in 2009, when he heard about iPhone apps, Zhu saw his chance for turning his passion into a business. A successful entrepreneur of an internet travel business and a technology veteran who had worked in the Silicon Valley for over 15 years, Zhu decided to put his business experience, technology know-how, and his love for travel to work and GPSmyCity was born. Today GPSmyCity publishes city walk iPhone apps for over 180 cities, with new destinations being added daily. Each of GPSmyCity’s city walk apps comes with several self-guided tours including visits to popular attractions as well as off-the-beaten path sights. For example, the Dublin app offers:

* Dublin’s Landmarks (10 sights)
* City Orientation Tour (15 sights)
* The Old Town Tour (7 sights)
* Places of Worship (7 sights)
* Art Galleries (9 sights)
* Cultural Walk – Old Town (10 sights)
* Captivating Nightlife (7 sights)
* Pub Crawl in Dublin (8 sights)
* Hidden Places Tour (8 sights)
* Tracing the Irish Writers (8 sights)
* Dublin for the Kids (7 sights)
* Parks and Gardens (5 sights)
* Daily Life in Dublin (7 sights)

With the average price of a tour bus ticket ranging from $30 to $50 (USD), it costs a family of four a total of $120-$200 for a couple hours of sightseeing. The GPSmyCity’s iPhone app costs just $2.99 to $4.99 each. Visitors using iPhone apps also enjoy the convenience of being able to explore the city on their own schedule and at their own pace. In addition to the tremendous cost saving and convenience, the GPSmyCity city walk apps will often take a visitor to places where no bus tours will go. These apps do not require internet access to function, so users can use the apps in foreign countries without incurring any roaming charges which can be very expensive.

GPSmyCity’s motto is “Lose Yourself Without Getting Lost”. With the powerful navigation features, plentiful tour selections and tremendous cost saving, GPSmyCity’s city walk apps on iPhone are the tour guides of the future.

Three Tips for Creating a Native iPad App

New York, NY – It’s in magazines and newspapers. It’s on television and radio. It’s on buses and billboards and pretty much everywhere you look (except for Apple stores, where it’s likely still sold out). It’s the iPad! Selling three million units in the first 80 days, this hot new touchscreen tablet from Apple is a runaway hit.

Every iPhone and iPod touch app developer looking to take the next step is moving into the iPad arena. Right now there are more than 200,000 apps in the App Store. With the iPad’s ability to run most of these existing apps without any modifications, iPad users have immediate access to a vast catalog of apps.

Although an existing iPhone app may run fine on the iPad, these unmodified apps provide an inferior user experience. iPhone apps pale in comparison to the sheer beauty and flexibility of native iPad apps. At the end of the day, iPhone and iPad are inherently different beasts, with different form factors and capabilities that encourage different usage patterns.

iPhone apps were designed for the iPhone, while the iPad should be treated as an entirely new platform with its own set of design requirements. Dave Wooldridge author of Apress’s latest book “Beginning iPad Development for iPhone Developers: Mastering the iPad SDK” provides three useful tips for all iPhone developers who want to leverage their skills to master the iPad-exclusive frameworks and features to create professional apps for the iPad:

Design app interfaces optimized for the iPad by taking advantage of the new UIKit features:
* Popovers
* Split View Controllers
* Modal Views

Build powerful productivity solutions that utilize:
* New graphics functionality
* Core Text
* Document Sharing
* Advanced input methods

Take advantage of the iPad’s superior media capabilities with its new video and display options

About “Beginning iPad Development for iPhone Developers: Mastering the iPad SDK”

SOS LED 1.0 released for iPhone 4 – More than a Handy Flashlight

Oderzo, Italy – Redbits today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of SOS LED 1.0, a new app for iOS devices with flash LED. SOS LED is much more than a handy flashlight. In settings the user can choose between three types of SOS pulses (slow, medium and fast) and three modes of operation: maximize the number of pulses, maximize the battery life or an adaptive mode that monitors the battery level and adjusts pulses to the residual battery life.

When in adaptive mode, the app is able to send SOS pulses for many hours. This app unique feature is that it sums SOS pulses and flashlight with emergency call and email into one handy app. In the upcoming 1.1 update, a second type of signal has been added for situations where the international SOS signal can’t be used because it’s reserved for severe distress conditions.

SkinCam for iPhone makes taking photos fun and easy

Rochester, New York – No Tie Software today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of SkinCam 1.0 for iPhone devices. The built-in camera app is okay, but hardly entertaining. It’s time someone did something about it, and No Tie Software has stepped up to the plate!

SkinCam is a fun way to take photos using an iPhone. Instead of a plain “preview”, users are treated to an assortment of “skins” such as a Digital Camera, Coin-Op machine, 3D glasses, hands “framing the shot”, peepholes, nightvision, rifle scope, telescope, binoculars, and many more! SkinCam is more than just an entertaining app. Unlike the built-in camera app, users can touch anywhere in the Preview area to take the picture, making it easier to take shots, especially self portraits.

More “Skins” are being added all the time, and users are encouraged to submit requests to No Tie Software. There are NO In-App purchases. As skins are added, they will be included at no extra charge. And don’t worry. The photos taken by SkinCam are unretouched and do not have the “Skins” applied to them. SkinCam is just a fun way to take quality pictures, for kids and adults alike. SkinCam works great on the iPhone 4, and all iPhones for that matter. Naturally, a camera is required, so the iPad and iPod touch will have to wait.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later (iOS 4.0 Tested)
* 3.0 MB

Pricing and Availability:
SkinCam 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Entertainment category.

Snow Globe Maker iPhone Apps Outsmart TSA Ban with Virtual Snow Globes

Reston, Virginia – New Snow Globe Maker version 1.4 app updates from iPhone app developer SnowGlobeMaker restore travel memories in the face of TSA’s ban on souvenir snow globes. With the Snow Globe Maker Beach, Winter, and Spring iPhone apps, all available now from the iTunes app store, travelers can create and share souvenir snow globes featuring their travel photos.

“Souvenir snow globes are among the most beloved of holiday memorabilia,” said SnowGlobeMaker creator Julie McCool. “Like most travelers, we return from trips with a camera full of photos. With the new photo integration in our Snow Globe Maker apps, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users can put travel photos to use as they create and share virtual, souvenir snow globes that won’t run afoul of the TSA ban.”

The Snow Globe Maker iPhone apps include:
* Support for the photo album and the iPhone camera to display photos in two styles
* A library of professional art for personalizing the snow globe inserts, background, and base
* An editable label, three snow styles, two zoom levels, and a custom theme song
* Integrated email, Facebook, and save photo menus

There are Snow Globe Maker apps for three different climates, so travelers can choose the one that best matches their destination or preference. Snow Globe Maker Beach provides the perfect souvenir setting for beach holidays, Caribbean cruises, and desert crossings. Travelers can choose Snow Globe Maker Spring to highlight trips to Ireland, New Zealand, and other grassy destinations. Snow Globe Maker Winter rounds out the options for those visiting snowy climates.

“I’ve travelled the world, but with this tough economy I’ve had to cut back on souvenir buying,” says Dr. Phineas Snarkenstein, made-up traveling know-it-all. “Frankly, my family was a little miffed at receiving the same old trinkets from my latest trip. The Snow Globe Maker apps save me money while giving me the freedom to create a unique snow globe for every stop on my trip and every member of my family.”

Snow Globe Maker app creations are easier to share than traditional globes; they can be sent in email, posted to Facebook, or saved in the iPhone photo album. Kids can take charge of souvenir creation on family trips, providing an amusing and creative activity during those inevitable waits. Crafty collectors can print saved snow globes and add them to scrapbooks, holiday cards, and travel displays. The Snow Globe Maker iPhone apps make souvenir collecting fun again.

SDKtoday iPhone App teaches you to develop your own apps

Toronto, Canada – Announcing that Kengin Consulting Inc., a mobile development consulting firm, has launched a new application for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users. Whether you are looking to build your own apps, acquire new skills for your resume, or just have some fun, you should check out SDKtoday now.

Kengin CEO, Jacob Kennedy, was prompted to develop SDKtoday as a result of the experiences he encountered while developing his own iPhone apps. “When I was first learning how to make iPhone apps, I had to aggregate solutions from a variety of sources. There was no single place I could refer to that would provide me with everything that I was looking for. To get what I needed, I had to either buy a book or download an app… either way, I paid in full but needed only a fraction of the content. That’s why I like our app, and our approach. You can download it, demo the tutorial options, and decide what fits your needs. This way, you only end up buying what you need while being provided with a sweeter and swifter path to app development success!”

Dennis Volovic of dedovo Inc., collaborated with Kengin as SDKtoday went from design to reality. “We always wondered why something like this was never done before. As we began to work on our app, it became clear why! Conveying the depth and breadth of the tutorials in a way that is intuitive and scalable is not so straightforward. My excitement really piqued, and I knew we were on to something when the S2C2 methodology came together; Start It, Stub It, Connect It, and Complete It. It’s that easy! This approach is so incredible, that we immediately began using it for all our own personal app development!”

Kennedy and Volovic both agree that the “piece de resistance” of the SDKtoday app, is the S2C2 learning methodology they created. The methodology was essential in streamlining the iPhone development process and provides a consistent learning experience throughout all tutorials!

SDKtoday App Features:

Tutorials:
* The app gives you THREE tutorials for FREE. Tutorials 101 through 109 make up the “introductory series” of the SDKtoday tutorials. Once mastered, you will be in a position to apply this knowledge to build your own apps. The tutorials are packed with clear and practical info. They are architected around core development topics and techniques that illuminate individually and collectively.

* In the Tutorial Detail view you can Demo the App, learn to Build It, or Download the Code

* In the Build Detail view, you have the freedom to read through the materials or watch videos bringing the app to life utilizing the S2C2 methodology.

* Tutorials 104-109 are already available for purchase in the Store section of SDKtoday, with more to come.

* Every tutorial gives you the opportunity to learn by way of watching videos or reading, and each works towards development of an actual app.

* Status Indicator: Toggle the status button to keep track of your progress. There are three tutorial states; Not Started, In Progress, and Complete.

Reference Section:
Provides an extensive reference section offering tips and other Xcode related literature. You can review the Core Data Object nomenclature, brush up on your Xcode Keyboard Shortcuts, learn a few Debugging Tips, and much more.

Store:
In addition to the free Tutorial offerings, there is a store full of additional tutorials. You can buy these tutorials and expand your SDK knowledge even further, right in the app. You can go through the tutorials in order, or in the classic “choose your own adventure” fashion.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later
* 6.5 MB

Pricing and Availability:
SDKtoday 1.1 is free and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category.
